The Rose That Grew…

Spring STEM Camp for middle school Crusaders included a creative writing workshop. They listened to a poem by Tupac Shakur called “The Rose That Grew from Concrete,” and responded with words and drawings of their own. Advisor Melanie Borges, who designed the workshop together with Advisor Harry Moore, says that Crusaders “drew parallels on what obstacles or ‘concrete’ held them back from reaching their dreams and created poems as well as pictures representing their goals and road bumps on their way to achieving success.”

The Rose That Grew From Concrete, by Tupac Shakur
Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature’s law is wrong it
learned to walk without having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.
