The Exchange City Buzz

For middle school Crusaders, February school vacation week means Exchange City, sponsored by Education in Action at Johnson & Wales University Harborside. The city is always buzzing when Crusaders are in charge. Everybody gets to work in a business, provide products and services to others, make and spend money, take out and repay loans, and cooperate in managing their own town. This week Crusaders ran city hall, the bank, the pizza shop, the post office, the radio station, the sports shop, the newspaper – in short, everything! And there was even a pretend wedding to celebrate. Congratulations and best wishes to Miss Catalina and Mister Yovanny!

Here are some of the things Crusaders said they learned from their experience:

  • You have to take responsibility and work as a team.
  • If we work together as a community, we can achieve anything.
  • If I tried I could succeed.
  • Some jobs might look easy but can be stressful.
  • I can do anything if I set my mind to it.
  • I am cooperative.
  • To get money and be successful, I have to work really focused and stay on task.
  • It’s hard to work in the real world.
  • It was easier to get something done if I helped.
  • It’s fun to work hard and never give up.
  • One person can’t do all the work.
  • Sometimes you have to get used to certain people.
  • I am a very hard worker.
  • I can be creative.
  • I can be strict.
  • I would make a pretty good boss.
  • Do stuff right and don’t be mean.
  • I am nervous at first but then enthusiastic.
  • I am a hard worker and take my job seriously.
  • There is no such thing as a one-person team.
  • Life is going to be hard.
  • Teamwork makes a good business.
  • I am able to adapt to different problems.
  • I can do many things.
  • It’s hard to work with people you just met, but if you learn about each other it’s much easier.
  • Working is very hard, so I know how my parents feel.
  • Try something new, and you might be good at it.
