Thanks to Senator Jack Reed

On November 14, a hundred middle school and high school Crusaders at Saturday Cru Club welcomed a special visitor – Senator Jack Reed! Senator Reed visited classes in the morning and then joined us for a big celebration and awards ceremony. One of the speakers for the event was Chanravy Proeung, a Cru Club instructor and a former Crusader who graduated from Rhode Island College with a nursing degree in 2008. Chanravy described the inspiration and support she received during her years as a Crusader and encouraged all the students in the audience to take advantage of everything The College Crusade has to offer.

The big moment arrived when an excited  team of Crusaders presented Senator Reed with the Dr. Americo W. Petrocelli Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes Senator Reed for “his extraordinary contribution to increasing college access for all Rhode Island students.” The award is named for Dr. Americo W. Petrocelli, who founded The College Crusade of Rhode Island 20 years ago when he was serving as RI commissioner of higher education.

The event also celebrated the 10-year anniversary of The College Crusade’s participation in GEAR UP, a nationwide program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to increase the number of students prepared to succeed in college. Other speakers at the event were Laurel Shepard, Cru Club manager; Todd D. Flaherty, College Crusade interim president & CEO; Bill Formicola, vice president of operations and GEAR UP director; Paul Moran, acting chair of the College Crusade board of directors; and Rick Petrocelli, who was representing his father, Dr. Americo W. Petrocelli. Many thanks to Johnson & Wales University, Harborside Campus, for hosting the festivities!
