School Vacation = Sci-Fi Stories + Science

How long have you been on the planet? Why is your spaceship damaged? When did you realize someone was following you? To learn the answers to these questions, you had to be in our February Vacation Club program for middle school Crusaders last week. In a creative writing workshop called “Sci-Fi and Post-Apocalyptic Fiction,” they created imaginative stories about traveling to other galaxies, surviving planetary disasters, and even handling an attack by vampire bunnies.

Real bunnies showed up, too – and snakes! Thanks to Animal Experiences, Crusaders had lots of hands-on time with a whole menagerie of interesting creatures, including milk snakes, box turtles, lizards, chinchillas, hedgehogs, and rabbits. And thanks to Pow!Science, they worked in teams to experiment with physics and build the highest towers and strongest bridges. It was a fun-packed week of exploration for 150 middle school students from Providence, Pawtucket, Central Falls, Woonsocket, and Cranston. Thanks to Segue Institute for Learning for hosting us!
