High School Leadership Council 2018-2019

Members of our High School Leadership Council assist the College Crusade advisors in their schools by sharing Crusade program and event news with other Crusaders. They also meet monthly as a group to discuss leadership topics. Learn about all 23 of them here!

Shaunice Afriyieb: Grade 10, Blackstone Academy. Favorite subject: Chemistry. I really like my teacher and the material is easy to understand, which means a lot coming from someone who used to despise any type of science. Extracurricular: Young Voices, student government, GSA, dance, church youth program. A recent accomplishment: Finishing the long application to TASS, a challenging six-week college-level seminar on topics related to critical Black and ethnic studies. A recent challenge: Transportation to school. I wasn’t close enough to walk, especially with my health difficulties, but my school offers a bus stop that is convenient now for me and my hardworking mother. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Participate in as many programs you can! They are super fun and helpful to your college journey, plus you can make plenty of friends there too. The Crusade does a great job at informing transitioning middle schoolers on what to expect in high school. What you look for in a friend: Humor, empathy, confidence, humbleness, honesty, and loyalty. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Fun, bold, and considerate. Dream job: A career where I can publicly speak and influence others. Career paths you would like to hear more about: Possibly something in law enforcement. What you do for fun: Talk, shop, dance, sew, clean, or make small videos with my friends and family. Favorite food: Mashed potatoes are hands down my favorite! Worst habit / best habit: Best is procrastination because I work extremely well under last-minute pressure. Worst is sleeping too often because I feel like I’m missing out on life. Recommended: The Hate U Give (book), The Pursuit of Happyness (movie). Top travel destinations: Ghana because it’s where my entire family came from. Or Toronto. Most important quality of a good leader: Cooperation. Productively working with your team and making sure that everyone is comfortable will always be a victory.

 

Juan Aguilar: Grade 12, Mount Pleasant High School  Favorite subject: Science and math. I find them easy. Extracurricular: Sports, work, babysitting, clubs. A recent accomplishment: Finishing my Common App. A recent challenge: Writing my college essay. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Don’t procrastinate. Don’t get lazy. What you look for in a friend: Trust, humor, being smart. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Funny, trustworthy, helpful. Dream job: Mechanical engineer. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Engineering. What you do for fun: Soccer, videogames, shop. Favorite food: Fried chicken. Recommended movie: Anything based on Marvel or DC Comics. Top travel destination: Bahamas. Most important quality of a good leader: Listening.

 

Genesis Aldana: Grade 11, Cranston High School East. Favorite subject: Spanish because we get to learn the proper language that can help for the future. Extracurricular: JROTC, class council, Best Buddies RI, Police Explorers, babysitting. A recent accomplishment: I received the Superior Cadet Medal. A recent challenge: Keeping my grade up in English but still being involved in school. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: You can only fail if you quit. Don’t stop trying until you make it. What you look for in a friend: Honesty, caring, mature, wants a future. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Motivational, outgoing, determined. Dream job: Being in the Army and being a high school Spanish teacher. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Educational administration, counseling. What you do for fun: Go to the gym, hang out with friends, read. Favorite food: Chinese food. Worst habit / best habit: Worst is that I don’t stay consistent with some things. Best is that I am organized, responsible, and involved. Recommended: The 5 Second Rule (book), The Untethered Soul (book), I Am Not Your Guru by Tony Robbins (movie), A Star Is Born (movie). Top travel destination: Jerusalem. Most important quality of a good leader: Confident, responsible, being a role model, staying positive in bad times, motivated, dedicated, respectful, kind.

 

Maya Barraza: Grade 11, Times 2 Academy. Favorite subject: Math. To me, numbers are easier and make more sense. It’s easier to comprehend than English. Extracurricular: Softball. A recent accomplishment: Having extra credits than I need to graduate. A recent challenge: Determining my science fair project. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Don’t procrastinate because it makes your life way harder. What you look for in a friend: Someone trustworthy and supportive. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Nice, smart, corny. Dream job: Doctor. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: The process of becoming a doctor or something in the medical field. What you do for fun: Spend time with my family. Favorite food: Pizza. Worst habit / best habit: Worst is procrastinating and cracking my fingers. Best is getting work done on time. Recommended: The Hate U Give. Top travel destination: Barcelona. Most important quality of a good leader: A strong voice.

 

Adrian Clemente: Grade 11, Providence Career & Technical Academy. Favorite subject: Literature. I find it very useful every day. When it comes to talking in front of a group of people or talking to a friend, it all depends on how you use your words. Extracurricular: I love going to the gym. A recent accomplishment: I’m proud of getting through last week, which was full of work and deadlines. A recent challenge: An injury to my left leg. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Don’t do DUMB things for attention. If you do, you’ll be known for doing dumb things. Stay on the radar but make good friends. Surround yourself with people who are ready and willing to work. What you look for in a friend: Loyalty, personality, and how self-motivated you are. I like surrounding myself with positive people. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Funny, social, smart. Dream job: Neuropsychology or becoming a chef. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Psychology and social work. What you do for fun: I play a lot of soccer and I like kicking it with my friends. Favorite food: Mexican tacos. I’m not talking about “Americanized” tacos. I’m talking about the tacos that are made with blood, sweat, and love from an old lady working in the stand. Worst habit / best habit: Worst habit has to be using my phone too much. I would have things to do but still be scrolling through Instagram. My best habit would be fixing my bad habits. I notice when I’m doing it and I stop. Recommended: Narcos: Mexico. Top travel destination: Mexico, to visit my family there and explore. Most important quality of a good leader: Communication skills and how organized you are.

 

Ashley Cruz: Grade 11, Shea High School. Favorite subject: Math because it actually makes we think, and I’m good at it. Extracurricular: Spanish Honor Society, cheer, volleyball, work. A recent accomplishment: Getting my license and a job on the same day. A recent challenge: Managing time. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Don’t slack in school. What you look for in a friend: Loyalty, respect, trustworthy, nice, caring. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Respectful, trustworthy, funny. Dream job: Law, forensics, or plastic surgery. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: All the above. What you do for fun: Sleep, Netflix. Favorite food: Pastelitos and pasta. Worst habit / best habit: Attitude / always being there for people. Recommended: The Hate U Give. Top travel destination: Greece because it is so beautiful in pictures. Most important quality of a good leader: Responsibility.

 

Erandi Godinez: Grade 12, Central Falls High School. Favorite subject: Financial literacy and English AP. Extracurricular: Helping with church events and doing community service hours at school. A recent accomplishment: I was able to get all As and Bs last quarter. I have become a stronger person and I am almost done with the whole college application process. A recent challenge: Trying to stay positive and happy at home with all the rough situations we are going through. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Motivate yourself to do better and make every program fun. Always get good grades and participate in as many programs as you can. What you look for in a friend: I usually just click with someone, but I like having a friend where we can motivate each other, always make each other laugh, support each other, keep up with grades, always have good intentions, and be a good influence.Three words your friends would use to describe you: Beyond supportive, sweet, and independent.  Dream job: Something with interior design and business. I would like to become a manager.  Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Anything. What you do for fun: Be with my family, watch movies. Favorite food: I love pasta. Worst habit / best habit: Eating slow. Top travel destinations: California, London, Spain. Most important quality of a good leader: Have a good sense of humor and be able to communicate.

 

Kaishawn Goncalves: Grade 9, Davies Career Tech High School. Favorite subject: Math. Extracurricular: Student Council. A recent accomplishment: I am proud of being in a pre-AP class. A recent challenge: Keeping all my grades 85 and above. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Work hard and be prepared for lots of homework. What you look for in a friend: Someone I can trust. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Funny, kind, helpful. Dream job: To own my own rescue center for marine life. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Marine biology. What you do for fun: Hang out with friends and family. Favorite food: Mashes potatoes. Worst habit / best habit: My worst habit is getting distracted easily. Recommended: Wonder, both the book and the movie. Top travel destination: Hawaii or New Orleans. Most important quality of a good leader: Trustworthiness.

 

Bintou Keita: Grade 10, Tolman High School. Favorite subject: Biology because it’s fun to learn about the body. I also like math because I think that math is fun. Extracurricular: I am part of DECA which is a business program at Tolman where we work at the school store and we compete nationally for scholarship money. A recent accomplishment: I got my grades up in Algebra II and history! I really want a better GPA and want all 90s. I’m really close. A recent challenge: Being more open to expressing my feelings with family members. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Take your classes and teachers seriously. Study! In middle school, things used to come easy to me but that changed in high school—it’s a different ball game! Also, don’t do things just to be cool. What you look for in a friend: Someone funny, compassionate, and supportive. I love someone who is “sunshiney.” Three words your friends would use to describe you: Smart (academic), wise (advice), and supportive. Dream job: Pediatrician. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: The medical field. Business and accounting. What you do for fun: I like t0 hang out with my family and watch a lot of TV.  Favorite food: Fried chicken. Worst habit / best habit: Worst is procrastination. Best is that I’m a planner. Recommended: The Hate U Give (both book and movie). Top travel destination: Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. I love the culture and it has a lot of nice sights to see. Most important quality of a good leader: Someone who listens, because you have to listen before you take action.

 

Alexia Lescarbeau: Grade 11, Woonsocket High School. Favorite subject: Science because there is so much to learn and always more things to be found out. Extracurricular: Tennis, National Honors Society, videogames. A recent accomplishment: I recently got accepted into the National Honors Society. A recent challenge: Time management and goal setting. I’m working on it. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Do your work and don’t procrastinate, or you’ll regret it. What you look for in a friend: Someone who is loyal, funny, and likes to hang out. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Quiet, funny, caring. Dream job: Forensic pathologist or veterinary technician. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Veterinary field, psychology, medical. What you do for fun: Hang out with my friends, play videogames, and listen to music. Favorite food: Thai food. Worst habit / best habit: My worst habit is procrastination, and my best habit is being polite. Recommended: The movie Venom, and the book A Child Called It. Top travel destination: Thailand. Most important quality of a good leader: Respect.

 

Jessica Lopez, Grade 12, Mount Pleasant High School. Favorite subject: English because I get to express myself in what I write. Extracurricular: Indoor/outdoor track, cross-country. I also work as a hostess. A recent accomplishment: Getting into National Honor Society and getting straight Bs. A recent challenge: Handling stress. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Don’t care about where your “friends” go because they won’t be the ones helping you to improve yourself and your grades. What you look for in a friend: Transparency and trust. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Reserved, responsible, humorous. Dream job: Opening my own school. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Education. What you do for fun: I work most of the time. Favorite food: French fries. Worst habit / best habit: Worst is fidgeting. Best is that I’m a good listener. Recommended: Black Panther. Top travel destination: Alaska. Because it’s cold. Most important quality of a good leader: Patience.

 

Renedia Louis: Grade 12, Cranston High School East. Favorite subject: Science because I like researching new things and I want to work in the anatomy/bio field. Extracurricular: Sports, class council, step team, youth group. A recent accomplishment: Applying to 14 colleges, mostly out of state because I want to explore the country and possibly the world. A recent challenge: My SATs. They didn’t really reflect my academic skills, which I know I excel in. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Focus! Have a goal and stick to it and be your own person! Also, get involved as much as you can. What you look for in a friend: Someone who is reliable and humble. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Caring, responsible, and extremely loud 😊. Dream job: Nurse practitioner or pediatrician. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Law enforcement. What you do for fun: Cooking and working with little kids. Favorite food: Baked macaroni with chicken, Haitian-style. Worst habit / best habit: Worst habit is getting mad too quickly and speaking my mind too much. Best habit is always getting stuff done on time. Recommended: Their Eyes Were Watching God (both book and movie). Top travel destination: Haiti or Paris. Most important quality of a good leader: Someone who is open minded and very humble.

 

Nayley Furcal Marte: Grade 12, Hope High School. Favorite subject: AP Calculus and AP Literature. They are the two hardest subjects I’m taking right now plus it has helped me to grow. Extracurricular: I’m an athlete but I also work after school. I’m part of Project Open Door that takes place every Saturday at Rhode Island School of Design. I’m also part of Hopeworks where I work at Frog and Toad on Hope Street. I’m part of Brown Civil Rights Movement Initiative and have traveled down south to meet with civil rights leaders. A recent accomplishment: I got a job at Frog & Toad. I love the place and how everyone is friendly. I love to work there especially because I’m learning about how to run a business. A recent challenge: Managing time and how I can get everything done and not slack off in school. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Do your best all the time because high school is the step right before real life. Always ask for help if you need it and take AP classes because that looks great for college. Most importantly, be involved with your community. Don’t let nobody stop you from reaching your dream. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Outgoing, creative, and passionate. Dream job: To run my own interior design business. Career paths you would like to hear more about: Interior design and business. What you do for fun: Paint and draw. Favorite food: Spaghetti. Worst habit / best habit: I don’t like waking up in the morning. My best habit is that I always finish my homework. Recommended: The Great Gatsby and Their Eyes Were Watching God. Top travel destinations: I would like to travel the world and experience new cultures. Most important quality of a good leader: To be someone who can give direction clearly and keep calm in any situation or circumstance.

 

Yairi Mejia: Grade 11, Times 2 Academy. Favorite subject: History. Law Class is one of the few classes where I just naturally engage. Extracurricular: Community services at day cares and churches. A recent accomplishment: Maintaining and having the highest average in Law Class for Seniors. Getting straight As and one B for first quarter. A recent challenge: Managing school and driver’s ed classes. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Studying is key. Use your planner to avoid procrastination. What you look for in a friend: Reliability, good school habits, trustworthiness. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Funny, smart, trustworthy/reliable. Dream job: Immigration lawyer. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Criminal justice. What you do for fun: Shop for sneakers. Favorite food: White rice and shrimp. Worst habit / best habit: Worst habit is procrastination. Best habit is studying. Recommended: The Hate U Give. Top travel destination: Dubai. Most important quality of a good leader: To be trustworthy and not a hypocrite.

 

Joanna Montoya-Vargas: Grade 12, Classical High School. Favorite subject: Math because it was always my strong suit. Forensic science because I want to be a forensic chemist. Extracurricular: Running track. A recent accomplishment: Achieving As in classes in senior year is very hard. A recent challenge: AP Calculus. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: It’s different. Stay focused. Work hard. What you look for in a friend: Trustworthiness, loyalty, appreciation, understanding. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Nice, kind, good listener. Dream job: Forensic chemist. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Forensic chemistry in depth. What you do for fun: Hang with friends and family. Favorite food: Avocado, beans. Recommended: KingsmenTop travel destinations: Mexico, Chile, Guatemala, Italy. Most important quality of a good leader: Understanding.

 

Janelie Ordonez: Grade 11, Central Falls High School. Favorite subject: As of now, biology. My teacher has a great way of explaining and getting kids to participate, and I like science. Extracurricular: SMILE, How to Change the World, and soccer. A recent accomplishment: I passed a precalculus summer class and I’m a junior taking a senior class. A recent challenge: Memorizing a 14-line monologue from Shakespeare in a day. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Do your work, don’t skip, do your portfolios, and make connections with teachers. They’ll write good college recommendations. What you look for in a friend: Loyalty, trustworthiness, and just someone I can vibe and be myself with. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Smart, dedicated, determined. Dream job: Medical examiner or FBI agent. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Forensic pathology and criminal justice. What you do for fun: Play soccer and do projects. Favorite food: My mom’s cooking. Top travel destinations: Bahamas, Spain, Japan. Most important quality of a good leader: Setting a good example.

 

Rosa Rodriguez Ortiz: Grade 12, Hope High School. Favorite subject: AP U.S. History. Extracurricular: Softball, tennis. A recent accomplishment: My internship at CVS Headquarters. A recent challenge: Learning how to be alone and be my own friend. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Don’t bunk class and don’t listen to your friends. Do good and make sure to do sports. Surround yourself with different people. What you look for in a friend: Someone who is there for me, who understands me, who loves me even if I do stupid things, but mostly someone who knows me. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Funny, goofy, and a good person. Dream job: Criminal psychologist. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Criminal justice and psychology, law and communications. What you do for fun: I play sports. Favorite food: Dominican food like pastelitos, rice, chicken, etc. Worst habit / best habit: My worst habit is going the extra mile for people. My best habit is I always want to put a smile on someone’s face. Recommended: FF8, any action movies, The Last Kingdom. Top travel destination: Italy or Brazil. Most important quality of a good leader: Know your people. Make sure everyone’s voice is heard. Look for the interest of everyone. Always help, even if it’s not your own group or subject.

 

Stacy Paulino: Grade 12, Classical High School. Favorite subject: Gym because I’m able to just have fun and not stress. I enjoy being active. Extracurricular: Cross-country, indoor track. Lacrosse. I was also an intern at the Rhode Island Department of Education. A recent accomplishment: Receiving the Academic All State and All Division awards in cross-country along with the Al Morro Award at my school. A recent challenge: Applying to a lot of colleges with a lot of deadlines. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: DON’T PROCRASTINATE! What you look for in a friend: Someone who is great at communicating, especially their feelings. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Funny, straightforward, adaptable. Dream job: Making a lot of money and not having to do much! What you do for fun: Listen to music in my room. Worst habit / best habit: Biting my nails. Cleaning up after myself at restaurants. Recommended: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Top travel destination: Spain. Most important quality of a good leader: Communicating with others.

 

Leidy Perez: Grade 10, Providence Career & Technical Academy. Favorite subject: English and math. English because I just took a liking to it and I enjoy going into detail about whatever is given to me. Math because I enjoy solving problems. A recent accomplishment: Getting ranked top 10 in my entire class. A recent challenge: Having a teacher who is hard to work with. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Know what you need to do, both for high school and College Crusade. Then you’ll have more free time to get other important things done. What you look for in a friend: Someone who is supportive, understanding, not always taking my side and being honest with me when I am not towards myself. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Nice, knowledgeable, overachiever. Dream job: Psychologist, graphic designer. Favorite food: Pasta, rice and beans. Worst habit / best habit: My worst habit would be letting things slide when I should not. Best habit would be being able to get things done even when there’s a lot of obstacles. Recommended: Bajo la Misma Luna. Top travel destination: Probably some place in Asia or Brazil. Most important quality of a good leader: Being flexible with whatever is thrown at you and being able to encourage and help others.

 

Kicha Pinthiere: Grade 12, Central High School. Favorite subject: English because I enjoy writing. Extracurricular: I love going to the gym and working out. A recent accomplishment: I made the Honor Roll for first quarter. A recent challenge: A test in AP Statistics. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Use your time wisely! What you look for in a friend: Honesty, loyalty, support. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Outspoken, confident, humorous. Dream job: Psychologist. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Criminal justice. What you do for fun: Exercise, Hulu, music. Favorite food: Buffalo wings! Worst habit / best habit: Worst habit is waking up late. Best is being a “neat freak.” Recommended: The movie Brotherly Love, and the Bluford Series books. Top travel destinations: France to visit my sister! Most important quality of a good leader: Someone who knows when to take advice from others and compromise.

 

Datsaris Reyes: Grade 12, Academy for Career Exploration. Favorite subject: Math. Extracurricular: I volunteer every Friday and sometimes do the soup kitchen on Thursday at St. Charles Church next to my school. A recent accomplishment: Getting into Johnston and Wales University with a scholarship for Pastry Arts. A recent challenge: I just recently went through something with my parents which was extremely hard for me, but everything is fine now thankfully. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Stay on top of your school work and make sure to keep your spirits up throughout high school because it can be hard sometimes. What you look for in a friend: Honesty is probably the only thing I look for in a person. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Smart, funny, and trustworthy. Dream job: To be to become a trauma surgeon. Career paths you would like to hear more about: I have always been interested in the medical field, and if that doesn’t happen I have always been interested in baking and pastry arts. What you do for fun: I spend time with my younger sister or go out for walks. Favorite food: I love burritos. Worst habit / best habit: My worst habit is probably asking for reassurance constantly. Recommended: The movie Wonder. Top travel destination: I would travel to Guatemala to visit my grandma who I miss dearly. Most important quality of a good leader: Being organized and knowing how to manage time wisely.

 

Michelle Santos: Grade 10, Blackstone Academy. Favorite subject: Math because it’s a smooth process. I like learning, and math has a lot of steps that are taken which I enjoy. Extracurricular: I am one of my school’s ambassadors. Also debate, robotics, student government, and soccer. A recent accomplishment: I got an award at my school that one student from each grade gets every month because they show grit and determination. A recent challenge: Finding a partner for my next debate tournament. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Do your Crusade hours because you will need them. It’s not hard to stay after school. What you look for in a friend: Support, trust, consistency, and understanding. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Hardworking, kind, caring. Dream job: To be a successful lawyer, medical researcher, or biochemist. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Law, lab medicine, anatomy. What you do for fun: Play soccer, go out with friends, watch shows. Favorite food: Mexican food, spicy food. Worst habit / best habit: Sometimes I procrastinate or my fear holds me back. Recommended: The Burn Journals. Top travel destination: Barcelona. Most important quality of a good leader: Be open-minded and a good listener for the audience. Be confident.

 

Fanta Traore: Grade 11, Jorge Alvarez High School. Favorite subject: English. Extracurricular: Steam Box, YLA, Yearbook. A recent accomplishment: Getting all As. A recent challenge: Taking a college class while also balancing actual high school work. Advice for middle school Crusaders getting ready for high school: Don’t play around. Do what you gotta do and be out. What you look for in a friend: Honesty, open-mindedness, compassion. Three words your friends would use to describe you: Funny, helpful, reliable. Dream job: I’m not sure. A singer maybe. Career paths you’d like to hear more about: Psychiatry, forensic science. What you do for fun: Play guitar, videogames, sing. Favorite food: Pizza. Worst habit / best habit: Worst is being too emotionally connected to people’s issues. Best is that I usually do things on time when necessary. Recommended: The Hate U Give. Top travel destination: Dubai. Most important quality of a good leader: Keeping people on the right path and never letting them stray away.
