Crusade Family Fun Day at the Park

College Crusade families had a blast at our Family Fun Day at Roger Williams Park on Sunday, August 25. There were games and prizes galore, plus plenty of food, music, dancing, and sunshine. A total of 45 families from Woonsocket, Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Cranston came out to meet new friends and enjoy an afternoon together. As a special treat, Mayor Angel Taveras of Providence and Mayor James Diossa of Central Falls paid a visit. Above is Mayor Taveras with College Crusade Family Engagement staff members Enma Velasquez, Claudia Galeano, Candace Harper, Karen Alzate, and Maribel Marte.

So many people and organizations made the day great! The Cambodian Society of Rhode Island’s Youth Dancers performed Robam Bopha Lokey, which means “flower of the worlds.” According to their teacher, Soeurng Bernheart, the young girls learn this piece early in their studies of classical dance, singing about how people appreciate the fragrance and beauty of flowers. Next on stage were the Peruvian Youth Dancers from the Center for the Arts and Culture (Sentro de Arte y cultura de las Americas), followed by The Rising Stars from Woonsocket, who performed their Hip Hop theme song with messages about youth safety. DJ Donnie Bennett volunteered his services for the day and kept the music going, and lunch was provided by Fellini’s of Providence.

Crusader Laura Parra, who is the daughter of Family Liaison Claudia Galeano, was our official face painter. She had a steady stream of young customers in between games of musical squares.

Sincere thanks are also due to the RI Blood Center and Way to Go RI, which provided information and free gifts for our families, and to the Roger Williams Park staff and New England Lemonade. Stay tuned for more great family events!
