4 girlsOn Saturday, March 28, a group of 38 middle school Crusaders learned how to read blueprints, tap a water main, simulate crane operation, design a bridge, use hammers and welding torches, and try out other hands-on skills of the construction trades. Girls only! They were part of the 2nd Annual Girls Nontraditional Trades Forum, which was sponsored by the RI Commission on Women and held at the Construction Career Academy in Cranston.

craneThe day started with a safety video produced by Gilbane Building Company. Crusaders from Providence, Central Falls, and Pawtucket then pulled on their hardhats and work gloves and explored a wide scope of skilled career fields that are increasingly open to women.
