Students and Alumni Shine at Our 2016 Believe Breakfast – Slideshow
An enthusiastic audience of nearly 300 people helped us celebrate our 2016 Believe Breakfast at the Providence Marriott Downtown on Thursday November 17! We honored four distinguished supporters, shared good news about our impact on college readiness and success in Rhode Island, and heard inspiring speeches from Crusaders. At left, College Crusade president & CEO Andrew Bramson congratulates Dr. Warren Simmons, recipient of the 2016 Dr. Americo W. Petrocelli Distinguished Service Award. Below, Andrew congratulates Crusade alums Gloria Benson ’03 and Dereck Mendoza ’05, recipients of the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award. (A third alumni honoree, Lydel Hall ’03 was not available for photos.)
Student speakers for the event (below from left) were Shaunice Afriyieb, Jeremy Garcia, and Linmary DaRosa. They captivated our audience with comments about their experience as Crusaders, their deep and abiding relationships with our Advisory staff, and their dreams for the future. “Being a Crusader is a privilege,” said Shaunice, an eighth grader from Pawtucket. “It makes you understand things you haven’t seen before. It changes your character. The programs get you thinking about who you are and who you want to be. It’s like a family that you want to be a part of.”
The Believe Breakfast celebrates the dedication of educators, state policymakers, business leaders, philanthropic organizations, community agencies, and families to supporting the academic and career success of Rhode Island’s young people. Honorary co-chairs for 2016 were Nicholas C. Donohue, President & CEO of the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, and Dr. Donald Farish, President of Roger Williams University.
