Nearly 60 Crusade parents and students poured into our multifunction room last Thursday for our 2016 Parent Recognition Night. They were treated to a warm welcome from Candace Harper, family engagement coordinator, and Enma Velasquez, family engagement assistant – and to special remarks from Laurel Shepard, associate director for admissions & family engagement. Then the fireworks began! Crusader Jeremy Garcia (below),who will enter grade 11 next year at Paul Cuffee High School, took the podium and talked about how the Crusade has helped him become a better learner:

jeremy garcia3“During my sophomore year I took one AP class, and that was AP Spanish. I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it. But then my College Crusade advisor Ms. Genesis helped me and said that whatever I put my mind to, I must go for it and achieve it. Now look at me. I passed the class with honors. Also going into my junior year, I’m going to take two AP classes, AP Biology and AP Government, the two hardest AP classes in the school, but I know I can make it with honors.”

Next up was Crusade alumna Estefania Clavijo (below), who graduated from Shea High School in 2014 and who will soon start her junior year at the University of Rhode Island. Estefania, who is majoring in Human Development & Family Studies, described why she is grateful for the help she got from her Crusade Advisors:

estefania3“When I was in high school, my advisors gave me all of the tools I needed to succeed, which led me to graduate being a part of the Rhode Island Honor Society. When the time to apply to college came around, they allowed me to make my own decisions and because of the support that I had received I was able to apply at URI through the Talent Development program. Whenever I encountered a problem at school I was able to deal with it because of the skills the Crusade helped me develop.”

The celebration continued as we were delighted to recognize nine dedicated Crusaders who earned the most Challenge Patches in Math from Khan Academy this year. They are: Vicente Coronel, Abdiel Soto, Kenny Urena, Michael Guerrero, Renedia Louis, Kevin Aldana, Kendra Gudiel, Carla Augustin, and Luis Sosa. Be sure to see the photo at top for Kenny, Kendra, Luis, and Kevin with their certificates! We also honored dozens of parents for earning the highest family engagement participation for 2016.
