College Credit for High School Crusaders

Thanks to a $60,000 grant from the RI Office of Higher Education, an increasing number of high school Crusaders are earning college credit early through dual enrollment programs. The grant is used to offset tuition costs for Crusaders so they are able to take advantage of dual enrollment programs offered by the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and the Community College of Rhode Island. Currently, 47 high school Crusaders are participating in Rhode Island College’s Early Enrollment Program (EEP), and 6 high school Crusaders are taking the University of Rhode Island’s Writing 104 course. The courses allow them to satisfy their high school requirements and give them a start on building credits toward college graduation. With the support of grant funds, we are actively recruiting Crusaders to participate in dual enrollment courses at URI, RIC, and CCRI in September 2014.

Above, a group of Crusaders in an English class at Central High School who are enrolled in RIC’s EEP program delve into Tony Morrison’s novel The Bluest Eye.

Crusaders involved in dual enrollment are excited about the opportunity to take on the rigors of college-level coursework. Here is what they are saying:

“The EEP course is allowing me to get an early start on college-level work and saving me a lot of money at the same time. I’m very grateful that The College Crusade will be taking care of my tuition cost. Without it I’m not sure I would have even registered for the course, since my family did not have the funds to pay for the credits.”
– Sergius P., grade 12

“I’m really excited to be able to graduate high school with some college credits! When my Crusade Advisor informed me of the tuition help, I could have cried tears of joy. My mother was already struggling trying to figure out how she would make the payment, and now knowing that the Crusade will cover the cost is wonderful!”
– Damaris R., grade 12

“I’m very, very thankful that The College Crusade of RI is assisting my family and me in paying for the credits earned through my EEP course. It feels good to have a head start and know I will graduate high school with some college credits.”
– Isabella D., grade 12
