College Advice Straight from Campus

What do you know now that you wish you had known as a high school student? How has college challenged you to step out of your comfort zone? Sixty College Crusade high school seniors heard a panel of undergrad Crusaders answer these questions and others at our Getting to College Conference on Sat October 20. The conference kicked off a weekend that culminated on Sunday with attendance at the RI Regional College Fair, sponsored by the RI Association of Admission Officers.

As guest speakers at the conference on Saturday, Patricia Adegboyega, Michael Jimenez, and Heckerly Flores (above from left) shared their perspectives, personal insights, and advice with Crusade seniors. Patricia is a biomedical engineering major at the University of Rhode Island, Michael is a mechanical engineering major at Providence College, and Heckerly is an English major at Rhode Island College. They talked about how their experience as Crusaders helped them in college, described their challenges and accomplishments, and explained how they use campus resources for support. They encouraged Crusaders to:

  • Open yourself up to new experiences and explore your independence
  • Hone your time management and organizational skills – you’ll need them
  • Make friends from other backgrounds
  • Don’t worry about knowing your major right away – find a major that you care about and that will motivate you to do well
  • Be proactive about staying in touch with the financial aid people on campus
  • Research as many scholarships as you can

After the panel, Crusaders attended workshops that walked students through the steps of applying to college, including making a plan, building a resume, understanding the common application, searching for the right college fit, and writing the college essay. The whole weekend offered loads of takeaways for our seniors as they tackle the college app challenge.
