Christine Ortiz ’11

Christine Ortiz ’11 (Classical High School) earned a B.S. in Biology from Salve Regina University in 2015. “I chose to study biology because I found myself more interested in the science classes in high school,” she says. “Once I took a few college classes, it solidified my interest in how the human body works.” She loved her college experience. “Living at Salve meant living by the water,” she says. “I got the chance to live on campus during the summer through work study positions, which meant that after the day was done, I could enjoy the beach!”

After graduating, Christine served for a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA member. “As a VISTA, I helped integrate community service into the curriculum at Salve Regina and led students towards getting involved in the Newport community throughout their time as undergrads,” she says. She now works as a Medical Scribe in the emergency departments at Lifespan Hospitals, helping with documentation and efficiency during patient care.

As a Crusader, Christine says, she learned to become involved in her own education. “The afterschool and summer programs and guidance from the Crusade advisors were so beneficial to learning about the process of applying to college,” she says. “My Crusade advisor Alexis Brown always had resources that made the application process so much more understandable. Going on college tours were what I loved most about The College Crusade. Picturing myself attending the schools we visited made all the difference in me wanting to succeed in high school and get to college. And receiving the College Crusade scholarship made an impact for me and my family in that it helped ease my worry about affording college.”

In her free time, Christine enjoys hanging out with family and friends and her dog, Kai. She has straightforward advice for Crusaders getting ready to start college: “It may not seem like you have a lot of control over your education, but you do! Take classes and get involved in things you like to do and your career will eventually fall into place.”
