Aliyeh Halloway ’17

 

Graduating this year from: Tolman High School. Favorite subject: “It used to be math, but now it’s science. I like learning about the world and how the world works.” Also loves: Languages. Because: “You can connect with people.” Speaks: Arabic, West African Krio, some Spanish. Is teaching herself: Korean. Senior portfolio highlight: A piece on a ceramic vase she created in art class. Takeaway: “You might have a vision of what you want to make, but it could become something else as you make it.” Latest accomplishment: “Knowing that I’ve been accepted into college. My parents always said that education is something no one can take away from you. It’s their dream for us and our dream for ourselves.” Latest challenge: First semester senior year. “I was nervous about college applications and SATs and balancing school and getting recommendation letters. It was stressful.” Was accepted to: University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, Boston College, Clark University, Framingham State University. Will attend: URI. To study: Biology and International Relations. Favorite Crusade program: Exchange City in middle school. “I worked for the insurance company. I liked learning how to write a check and balance a checkbook.” About my Crusade advisor: “She has been amazing. All of them are. They’ve been there for us to talk to so we can accomplish our goals. They are advisors and friends.” Advice for Crusaders starting high school: “It’s going to be tough. There will be ups and downs. But you have to keep going and trying and believing in yourself.” What she looks for in a friend: “Someone you can talk to who will be there and will give you their honest opinion and who isn’t afraid to challenge your thoughts and help you grow.” Biggest unknown about college: “Will I make friends and connect with new people from so many other places?” What she does for fun: Draws, plays guitar, learns about other cultures. Extracurricular: Yearbook, Student Council, president of National Honor Society, president of Mathletes, assistant manager for boys’ volleyball. Also: Works for the Pawtucket COZ as a club advisor. Dream job: To deliver babies. “Birth is such a miracle to me.”
