Akshar Patel ’05

aksharpatel3Akshar Patel ’05 (Tolman High School) graduated from Boston University in 2009 with a B.A. in Biology and a Minor in Public Health. He currently works for the Rhode Island Department of Health, where he is a Planner for the H1N1 Response. In the future, Akshar plans to earn a master’s in Public Health, concentrating in International Health.  His ultimate goal is to work with the United Nations or a similar entity on community health development or disaster relief in developing countries.

“My experience as a Crusader was exciting,” says Akshar. “I still remember Courtney McEntee, who was our Crusade mentor at Tolman. I was able to talk to her about anything and everything. Courtney was also really good at getting me to visit colleges and attending college fairs.” Encouragement from Courtney helped Akshar make the decision to attend BU, where he thrived. “I feel like I really grew as a person,” he says. “I was suddenly in an atmosphere where I didn’t know anyone and had to meet new people. The professors not only challenged me academically, but also taught me to look at real life situations, in a way I had not been able to before. Going to BU made me step outside my comfort box and helped me realize my strengths and also my weaknesses.”

During college, Akshar was able to meet people from all over the country, and the world. “The people you meet will become your family and you will enjoy college more as you get to know them better,” he says. “Schoolwork should be a top priority, but it’s also important for you to stay involved with school teams, clubs, or volunteer activities. The more active you are, the more you can enhance your education.”

In his free time, Akshar loves to read, watch movies, and get together with friends.
