Sabrina Solares ’03

sabrinasolares6.jpgSabrina Solares ’03 (Charles E. Shea High School) graduated magna cum laude from Johnson & Wales University in 2007. She earned an A.S. in Hotel Management and a B.S. in Hospitality Management, with concentrations in Leadership Studies and in Sales & Meeting Management. Sabrina currently works as Event Coordinator for The Savory Grape Wine Shop, an award-winning wine retailer located in historic downtown East Greenwich. Among many other events, she recently helped to organize The Savory Grape’s 2nd Annual Fall Wine Festival as a successful fundraiser for the RI Community Action Association.

Sabrina has warm memories of her time as a member of The College Crusade. “It was a great organization on social, intellectual, and personal levels,” she says. “Advisors held roles similar to that of guidance counselors, but were far more trusted than the average school official. The Crusade was responsible for my first bit of exposure to college options. The financial assistance I received for my college education was particularly useful.”

Sabrina is especially grateful for one Crusade mentor named Anne Birdsell. “She was very helpful to me,” she recalls. “I remember her as a kind young woman. She got me involved in grant writing, which eventually led to a three-year role I had with a youth philanthropy group called YES!, or Youth Encouraging Solutions.” Thanks to her mentor’s nomination, at 15 years old Sabrina was the youngest person ever to be inducted into the Pawtucket Teen Hall of Fame. “If I remember correctly, I had more than 200 hours of community service over the course of one year,” she notes. “It led to many awards, banquets, honors, and wonderful experiences. It was great overall and showed me what I could accomplish. I think Anne was the first person to really show me my true potential.”
