Derek Puerta3.jpgDerek Puerta ’03 (William E. Tolman High School) graduated from Boston University’s College of Communication in 2007, earning a B.A. in Mass Communications with a concentration in Spanish. Derek currently works for the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C. He is a Staff Assistant to U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse from Rhode Island, working on various administrative projects and constituent affairs.

Derek credits his College Crusade Advisor, Courtney McEntee, for the success he is experiencing today. “To be quite honest,” he says, “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for Courtney’s guidance. I was always a good student throughout high school but was very uninformed about college. Throughout my junior year, Courtney had me go on countless college visits and attend many college fairs. She reached out to me, and to many other students at my high school, helping us all with many school and out-of-school issues.”

Derek remembers the special attention Courtney gave him with his college applications. “She stayed after school with me every day between the months of September and December, helping me write college essays and personal statements,” he says. “She was very helpful and patient through these months. I could never thank her enough for being there for me. In my opinion, Courtney is a great reflection of what the Crusade is all about — a program that cares to see its members succeed.” In addition to his work for Sen. Whitehouse, Derek enjoys reading about politics and furthering his knowledge about the Senate and how our country is run. He also enjoys sports, especially soccer.
