Gloria (Benson) Joseph ’03

Gloria (Benson) Joseph ’03 (Mount Pleasant High School) graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2007 with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies and a minor in Leadership Studies. She earned an M.S. in Human Development and Family Studies with a concentration in College Student Personnel from the University of Rhode Island in 2010.

Gloria currently works as a Counselor & Coordinator for Educational Talent Search at the Community College of Rhode Island. “I work with middle and high school students to ensure they remain and excel in school, in preparation to graduate high school and enroll in college,” she says. “I also assist students and their families with the entire college application process. I love being able to support first-generation and low-income students as they navigate the college process and reach their full potential – just as my Crusade advisor did for me.”

Gloria has a unique appreciation for The College Crusade, “I truly enjoyed my experience as a Crusader and can say that I received a great deal of guidance from my advisor, Leo,” she says. “I know how intimidating the process can be for students. Having someone to show support and guide me through that time in my life is something for which I will forever be grateful.” She remembers touring the University of Rhode Island as a Crusader. “I wanted to go out of state and had no intention of staying in Rhode Island,” she recalls. But the visit opened her eyes. “There was more to URI than I had thought,” she says. “I began to see that it was a good option for me.”

Previously Gloria was employed for several years as a Prevention Education Specialist for Day One, the Sexual Assault and Trauma Resource Center, where she developed and facilitated workshops on sexual violence prevention for students, parents, administrators, and staff. During her graduate career, she served as a Graduate Assistant with URI’s Substance Abuse Prevention Services in the Office of Student Life. She also worked as a High School Liaison for Pathways Through College, a dual enrollment program partnership between Mount Pleasant and Rhode Island College, and as a College Advisor for the College Advising Corps at Brown University.

Gloria is a founding member of the College Crusade Alumni Association and received the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award. In her free time, she likes to spend time with her husband and son, travel, and rewatch her favorite movies.
