destiny woodbury v3Destiny Woodbury ’02 (Mount Pleasant High School) graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2007 with a B.S. and B.A. in Chemistry, a B.A. in Secondary Education and a minor in Leadership Studies. She taught middle school science for 8 years in Houston at Deady Middle School and KIPP Liberation College Preparatory. During her 5 years in KIPP Houston, she was the grade level chair, science department chair, middle school science curriculum leader, teacher leader, robotics coach, and head track and field coach.

In addition to leading her students in engaging science lessons and labs, she has served as a Corps Member Advisor and Corps Member Advisor Coordinator at the Teach For America Houston Institute. She is currently the Manager of Teacher Leadership Development (MTLD) of 38 first and second year STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) teachers in Texas with Teach for America, where she significantly impacts their development as teachers, therefore playing an important role in the achievement of about 4,400 students. Destiny was also a finalist in the nationally prestigious TNTP Fishman Prize for Superlative Classroom Practice in 2015.

“My experience being a Crusader was amazing,” says Destiny. “Not only does it help you prepare for college, you also learn leadership skills that will help you in the real world. To me, education is preparing students for life outside of high school. Now that I am a teacher, I want my students to know that what I am teaching them will relate to their lives and our lives as a society. Education is shaping students to become productive members of society and the community,” she adds. “Each student should graduate with the skills to make good decisions and the knowledge to back up those decisions.”

Destiny was an outstanding track athlete during her time at URI. She now runs track professionally and is currently training for the 2016 Olympics. She says that being a instructional coach and an athlete at the same time is very demanding but she loves doing both. Destiny’s aspiration is to become a middle school founding principal in Rhode Island.
