Nelson Alex Amparo ’02 (Classical High School) graduated magna cum laude from Johnson & Wales University with a bachelor’s degree in financial services management. He is currently employed by MetLife as a Financial Advisor in Waltham, Mass. Alex believes his experience as a Crusader had a tremendous impact on his life. “My greatest memories were the afterschool program held at the Elmwood Community Center, where I spent countless hours after school receiving help with my homework and taking part in many character-building activities and the occasional field trip,” he recalls. “It was definitely a program which allowed me to grow academically and socially and served to distance me from the distractions which were taking place in my surroundings.” He remembers one volunteer in particular named Kristine, who was his mentor for 3 years.

In order to work as a financial adviser, Alex first had to obtain various state and federal licenses, among them the NASD Series 6, 63, and 65 certifications. “I passed all my examinations successfully and began my career as a financial adviser,” he says, “helping people formulate the strategies necessary in order to reach their financial goals in life. Among these goals may be things such as retirement planning, saving for college, and protecting your family with life insurance. It’s a very fulfilling career that allows me to have a long-term impact on the lives of the individuals whom I serve.” In his free time, Alex enjoys playing and coaching baseball. “I volunteer coach a Senior League team in the Elmwood Little League, where I have the privilege of passing on my knowledge of the sport as well as instilling the values which go along with sportsmanship to a great group of 13 to 15 year old kids,” he says. “I also play in a local Amateur league throughout the summer and fall months, which allows me to stay in shape and keep doing what I love in staying on the baseball diamond!”
