Moneca S. Kennedy ’01

moneca kennedy.jpgMoneca S. Kennedy ’01 (Hope High School) is graduating from the University of Rhode Island this spring with a B.A. in Human Development & Family Studies, a minor in Psychology, and a certificate in alcohol and other drug counseling. “I am a people person,” she explains. “At first I wanted to become a lawyer or a pediatrician. Then I became inspired to teach because I enjoy helping, guiding, and educating children.” Moneca has worked in several childcare settings with five-year-olds. She has also worked with behaviorally challenged adolescent girls. She is currently a Teaching Partner at the Paul Cuffee School in Providence.

Moneca appreciates the support and assistance she received as a Crusader. “I remember my experiences as a middle school and high school student, and at times it was challenging,” she recalls. “But taking the SATs, filling out college applications, preparing for school presentations, and applying for summer jobs were made easy because I had mentors there to guide me and help me achieve my goals.” She remembers that all the Crusaders in her school would meet regularly with Crusade staff to discuss different issues and concerns they had about high school, college, and life after college. “My most memorable Crusader moment was when we were given the opportunity to visit the University of Rhode Island my senior year in high school,” she says. “We got to explore the dormitories, student lounges, and other attractions at the university. That experience helped me choose my college and made me realize that being a Crusader is very beneficial.”

Moneca received a College Crusade Scholarship to attend URI and was accepted into the Talent Development program the summer before entering college. “I hope my experience can serve as a guide and inspiration to current Crusaders,” she adds. “Thanks for the opportunity to share my story as an alumnae.”
